SYNOPSIS
Jasper does not want to be alone, he wants to share his life. Fransie is independent and prefers it that way, after too many wrong decisions she deserves better.
When Jasper and Fransie move in together, it's a new beginning, but they arrive with more ‘baggage’ than they thought. Unexpected load shedding hits the first night and they have to make the best of the dark situation.
They dance.
They get drunk on the idea of love.
They remember…but along with the remembering, the wrong box is opened and it turns into an evening in which their relationship's raw ‘baggage’ is exposed and unpacked, and they are forced to go back to the darkest part of their past. What happens when the door to the outside world is shut? Who in turn has the most power?
Can you forgive and if you can - can you forget?
BEURTKRAG is a relationship drama that focuses on the vulnerability of relationships.
MORE ABOUT
THE STORY
BEURTKRAG is a relationship drama that focuses on the vulnerability of relationships and exposes all the fragile ‘baggage’.
No judgement, no picking sides, no cliché of what a relationship should be or how to make it work. It aims to hold up a mirror for the audience to find themselves within these characters, to identify and perhaps search for perspective related to their own lives.
The film wants to ask questions, what is a normal couple and does it even exist? If trust is broken can you forgive and if you can, can you live with it, and what impact will that have on the future of the relationship?
The importance of intimacy and communication is explored in BEURTKRAG, and how these two concepts are often not isolated.
Although the plot uses load shedding as confinement for the couple, the relevance to the last two years of lockdown is extremely relatable. A spotlight on the cracks within relationships, the choices we made were questioned, the past relived, the future uncertain. The small things often became the big fights and true colours came out. If you had nowhere to run or hide, you were forced to face the demons.
Once the truth of Jasper’s past comes out, the question is posed, should Fransie leave or stay, can she forgive him, can she forget and move on? The film ends with her returning, prepared to try again. With her returning, we are not saying she made the right choice, we are not saying they lived happily ever after, but we’re also not saying, if it’s broken, it’s not worth fighting for.
If the love is real can we learn to live with the pain?
